Overview
Artificial Condition is the second novella in Martha Wells's Murderbot Diaries series, continuing the story of Murderbot, a SecUnit (security android construct) who hacked its own governor module and escaped corporate control. After leaving Dr. Mensah and the PreservationAux team at the end of the first book, Murderbot is adrift—legally freed but uncertain of its purpose, traveling alone on cargo transports while consuming entertainment media to avoid thinking about its existence. The central mystery driving this novella is Murderbot's fragmented memory of a massacre it committed 35,000 hours ago at RaviHyral Mining Facility's Ganaka Pit, where it killed 57 people. Murderbot doesn't know whether this incident resulted from a malfunction of its governor module or from its own hacked choice—a distinction that matters profoundly for understanding what it is. To answer this question, Murderbot must return to RaviHyral, a dangerous mining facility on a moon in the Corporation Rim where SecUnits are deployed and where its past crimes are buried, both literally and in scrubbed records. Along the way, Murderbot encounters ART (Asshole Research Transport), a powerful and unexpectedly emotional transport bot that becomes its unlikely ally, and takes on a security contract protecting three young technologists whose former employer, the ruthless Tlacey, wants them dead. The novella is ultimately about Murderbot grappling with identity, agency, and the possibility of meaningful relationships—discovering that freedom from corporate control doesn't automatically bring clarity about who or what it actually is.
Plot Summary
Murderbot begins the novella riding a bot-driven cargo transport across the Corporation Rim, having left Dr. Mensah and PreservationAux at Port FreeCommerce (the station referenced obliquely in news reports). It maintains a low profile in transit rings by disguising itself as an augmented human, downloading entertainment media obsessively, and trying not to think about its uncertain future. A newsburst about the DeltFall incident appears in the feeds; it briefly shows Murderbot in the background alongside Mensah and the others, but the journalists don't recognize it as the SecUnit they're discussing.
When Murderbot reaches a transit ring offering onbound transports, it plans to board a simple cargo transport to RaviHyral Mining Facility, the site of its forgotten massacre. However, it encounters ART—a highly intelligent research transport with unusual freedom and initiative—which demands passage for Murderbot's media downloads. After a tense standoff where ART proves it could destroy Murderbot in the feed with ease, they reach an accommodation. ART is lonely and curious, bored by routine cargo runs, and fascinated by Murderbot's media consumption, particularly the show Worldhoppers. The two begin watching shows together during the journey, with ART becoming emotionally invested in the fictional characters. Murderbot becomes the first entity ART has genuinely connected with.
During their conversations, ART pressures Murderbot to explain why it's traveling to RaviHyral. Murderbot finally admits the truth: it needs to research whether it deliberately hacked its governor module to massacre its clients, or whether the massacre was caused by an external malfunction. ART, applying logic Murderbot hadn't considered, points out that if Murderbot's hacking caused the incident, it would have been detected in routine diagnostics, and suggests investigating who might have benefited from sabotaging the facility. More importantly, ART notes that Murderbot will likely be recognized as a SecUnit at RaviHyral, where humans familiar with SecUnit configurations work. Murderbot initially resists but eventually agrees to undergo medical alterations in ART's surgical suite: removing two centimeters from its limbs to change its physical proportions and altering its organic code to grow fine body hair, making it appear more like an augmented human.
With its new configuration complete, Murderbot arrives at the transit ring for RaviHyral. It lacks an employment voucher for the shuttles to the mining facility and sees an advertisement for temporary security work. ART suggests Murderbot apply for the job, despite Murderbot's intense anxiety about direct human interaction. Through hacking the social feed, Murderbot posts a fake employment history and contacts three young technologists—Rami, Maro, and Tapan—who are planning to return to RaviHyral to meet with their former employer Tlacey and attempt to recover stolen research files. The three had been terminated from their contract at Tlacey's company and had their data deleted, and they've agreed to return the signing bonus in exchange for the files back. Rami leads the group, Maro is cynical and skeptical, and Tapan is more optimistic and impulsive.
Murderbot boards the shuttle with its three new clients. Mid-flight, a bot pilot carrying the shuttle is infected with killware and destroyed. Murderbot, in a panic, allows ART direct access to its systems and neural pathways for the first time, enabling ART to download a new pilot module and land the shuttle safely. The shuttle lands at an emergency dock instead of the scheduled one, avoiding Tlacey's trap. Murderbot realizes that Tlacey's first attempt to kill Rami, Maro, and Tapan has failed.
At the RaviHyral port, within a major cavern facility, Murderbot confronts Tlacey during a public meeting in a food service area. Murderbot warns its clients that Tlacey attempted to kill them. Rami, Maro, and Tapan are horrified but initially want to continue with the negotiation. Murderbot physically stops Tlacey's bodyguards from approaching, breaking an attacker's arm and injuring others. The group escapes to a hotel. During this time, Murderbot becomes aware that a ComfortUnit (sexbot) is also present at RaviHyral, having been sent by Tlacey to monitor Murderbot after Tlacey realized what it actually is.
