Chapter Five

Murderbot orchestrates a daring rescue of Dr. Mensah from GrayCris operatives at a transit station, using hijacked systems and combat to extract her from a pod carrying hostile security forces and a SecUnit. After defeating the immediate threats, Murderbot and Mensah escape through the station's maintenance systems and cargo infrastructure toward the port where allies await with a company shuttle.

Murderbot waits in a pod as GrayCris security and an armed SecUnit arrive with Dr. Mensah at the hotel transit station. After establishing secure feed contact and receiving Mensah's authorization to proceed, Murderbot executes a coordinated attack: it delays the pod carrying Mensah and the six hostiles, then boards and neutralizes the team using a human hostage as a shield against the SecUnit's weapons, disabling it with armor-piercing projectiles to the neck and knee joints. Two additional GrayCris operatives on the transit platform are incapacitated using a holographic thunderstorm deployed by the hotel's active decor system for cover. Mensah and Murderbot board a pipe capsule heading toward the port, but hotelSec personnel detect their departure. Forced to improvise, Murderbot executes an emergency exit from the moving pipe capsule at an empty office building platform, deleting all records of the incident. They navigate through the building's maintenance levels and into the access backbone—a cargo transport system between station levels and the port—commandeering an automated carrier. During the journey, Mensah expresses relief at seeing Murderbot and briefly hugs her. They discuss Murderbot's previous involvement at the GrayCris facility on Milu and Murderbot's decision to gather evidence and eventually leave the Corporation Rim after learning of Mensah's disappearance. Dr. Mensah apologizes for the situation and mentions her worry that Murderbot would be caught. As they approach the port, Murderbot's systems alert it that they are nearly at their destination.
