Chapter Eight

Overview

Murderbot recovers from a catastrophic memory failure suffered during the gunship attack, gradually rebuilding its cognition while recovering in a medical suite aboard a ship approaching Preservation Transit Station. The group arrives at the station and secures accommodations, keeping Murderbot's true nature as a SecUnit secret from the authorities and other visitors.

Summary

Murderbot's memory exists in fragmented pieces following a catastrophic failure incurred while fighting the code attack on the company gunship. Recovery is slow due to poor access speeds, but emotional responses accelerate the repair process. Gradually, Murderbot pieces together that it is in a MedSystem aboard a ship with Dr. Mensah, Ratthi, Gurathin, and Pin-Lee, approaching Preservation Transit Station. The ship is old and poorly equipped, having been retrofitted from a decommissioned vessel. Upon arrival at the station, the group disembarks and settles into diplomatic guest suites at a hotel attached to the admin center. Ratthi and the others secretly install cameras throughout the connected suites to provide security monitoring. Arada and Overse visit and offer Murderbot a job on an independent survey mission outside Corporation Rim control. Pin-Lee, acting as Murderbot's legal counsel, secretly provides backup ID markers and currency cards for insurance. A newsburst reveals the bond company has declared war on GrayCris following the gunship attack, with other corporations and political entities becoming involved due to revelations about GrayCris's illegal possession of synthetic remnants. After completing its memory rebuild at thirty-seven hours post-arrival, Murderbot explores the station's mall and security infrastructure, then slips into Mensah's office. When Mensah arrives with her family, including her young daughter, Murderbot shares combat footage with the child and discusses its role in Mensah's rescue. Mensah informs Murderbot that it has received a job offer from GoodNightLander Independent to work as a security consultant, and that Dr. Bharadwaj wants Murderbot to consider making its story public through a documentary to support the movement for construct and bot citizenship. Mensah emphasizes that Murderbot has options and time to decide its future.
