Overview
Fourth Wing is a fantasy novel set in the war college of Basgiath, where twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail is conscripted into the Riders Quadrant despite her physical fragility and lifelong preparation for the Scribe Quadrant. Her mother, General Lilith Sorrengail, the commanding general of Navarre, has reassigned her from scribal duties to military dragon riding—a decision that sends Violet into a deadly gauntlet of trials where roughly half of all first-year candidates die within their first year. The Riders Quadrant is ostensibly focused on bonding with dragons to defend the kingdom from external threats, but beneath the surface lies a web of secrets: a hidden rebellion of marked ones (children of executed rebels forced into military service as a condition of survival), a forbidden history spanning four centuries, and an existential threat from venin—soulless beings who consume magic and devastate neighboring kingdoms while Navarre's wards keep them powerless within its borders. Violet must not only survive the physical ordeals of parapet crossing, hand-to-hand combat, dragon bonding, and aerial warfare, but also navigate the treacherous political landscape of the quadrant while discovering her own extraordinary powers and uncovering the truth about her supposedly dead brother. The novel explores themes of survival, deception, loyalty, and the cost of truth in a world where those in power maintain dangerous secrets to preserve the status quo.
Plot Summary
On Conscription Day, Violet Sorrengail—a physically fragile twenty-year-old trained her entire life for the Scribe Quadrant—is unexpectedly conscripted by her mother, General Lilith Sorrengail, into the Riders Quadrant at the war college of Basgiath. Her sister Mira equips her with protective gear and warns her about Xaden Riorson, a powerful third-year wingleader whose father was executed by their mother. Violet's older brother Brennan, she is told, was killed by Xaden's father during a rebellion. At the parapet—a rain-slicked bridge all candidates must cross to enter the quadrant—Violet witnesses her friend Dylan slip and fall to his death. When a candidate named Jack Barlowe attacks her, Violet cleverly uses her knowledge of the Codex to invoke regulations forbidding violence under supervision, saving herself. She crosses successfully but learns she is now in Fourth Wing, placed directly under Xaden's command. Over the following weeks, Violet discovers that Xaden orchestrated her squad's transfer as an act of revenge. When she is matched against a marked one named Imogen in hand-to-hand combat, her shoulder is severely dislocated. While healing, she finds a hidden journal left by her dead brother Brennan, annotated by Mira, which teaches her how to predict combat challenges and gives her hope for survival. Desperate to strengthen herself against opponents, Violet begins systematically poisoning her combat challengers using herbs and berries she gathers, winning five consecutive matches without killing anyone. When her next opponent is incapacitated, Xaden volunteers to fight her instead. During their demonstration match, he reveals he knows about her poisoning and teaches her fatal strike points while creating an intensely charged moment between them. Violet is offered a chance to transfer to the Scribe Quadrant by Colonel Markham, but she refuses, determined to prove herself. On Presentation Day, Violet uses her ingenuity to complete the deadly Gauntlet obstacle course through improvised methods—dragging a rope across the chimney section and using her dagger as a handhold on the final ramp. When questioned about using external tools, she cites Codex Article Three, Section Six, Addendum B, which allows any item carried across the parapet to be considered part of one's person, and Xaden accepts her argument. One hundred forty-seven first-year cadets attempt bonding with dragons in a valley. Violet has no connection to any dragon until she overhears Jack, Oren, and Tynan planning to kill a golden feathertail dragon they deem too weak. She positions herself between the dragon and the attackers to protect it. During the fight, an enormous black dragon named Tairneanach appears and incinerates Tynan. Despite her injuries, Violet climbs onto Tairn's back. During a dramatic flight, she nearly falls but Tairn catches her, revealing he has chosen her for her intelligence, cunning, courage, and because she saved the golden dragon. When she reports her bonding, the golden dragon—revealing her name as Andarnaurram, or Andarna—insists she has also bonded to Violet, creating the shocking revelation of a dual bonding. The bonding ceremony ends with dragons breathing fire to mark each new rider, and Violet sees her mark: a black dragon in flight with a golden dragon in the center. Violet is now the target of forty-one unbonded cadets seeking to kill her to claim Tairn. Social dynamics in the quadrant invert overnight; cadets who previously ignored her now seek her company out of fear. During flight training, Tairn deliberately drops Violet repeatedly during complex maneuvers to force her to learn independence, and she persists despite the falls. Dain, now aware that Xaden and Violet have kissed, awkwardly clarifies that their previous kiss was a mistake and that regulations forbid relationships with superiors. Violet realizes she feels relieved rather than disappointed. In her bedroom one night, seven unbonded cadets including Oren attack Violet while she sleeps, attempting to murder her. Andarna freezes them in time, and Xaden arrives to kill all the attackers with brutal shadow magic. Xaden reveals that Andarna is a rare feathertail whose power to pause time is exceptionally dangerous and must be kept secret, as she could be hunted and exploited. When Xaden demands to know the identity of the rider who unlocked Violet's door, Violet refuses, but he eventually learns it was Amber Mavis, a wingleader. Xaden publicly accuses Amber before the quadrant leadership, and when dragons share Violet's memories with the gathered riders, all doubt dissolves. The quorum finds Amber guilty, and Tairn executes her by incinerating her with dragonfire, a brutal act that horrifies Violet. Through conversations with Liam, a fellow first-year marked one, Violet learns that the 107 children of rebellion officers were forced into the Riders Quadrant as a condition of being allowed to live. Liam reveals he was fostered by Duke Lindell alongside Xaden Riorson after his father's execution. During Squad Battle training, the cadets discover classified reports of attacks and looted supply convoys that are not being addressed in their curriculum, suggesting the leadership is hiding information. Her squad wins the right to shadow an active wing at the front lines. Violet finally manifests her signet power when Tairn begins mating with Sgaeyl, and the overwhelming emotional bleed causes her to channel magic for the first time. Xaden teaches her to shield her mind from the dragons' emotions by grounding herself mentally. During their time together shielding, intense attraction erupts between them, and they kiss against a wall in falling snow. Xaden stops the encounter, realizing the desire driving her is still primarily Tairn's, not authentically hers. In the weeks that follow, Violet learns that Jack Barlowe has manifested an illegal vibration-based signet and will challenge her. During their match, Jack uses his signet to cause excruciating internal pain and strangles her, but Violet poisons him with an orange extract that closes his airway. She loses consciousness and wakes to find Xaden standing vigil in the infirmary. He claims their kiss was a mistake born of circumstance and announces he will take over her training. Over February and March, Xaden intensively trains Violet, pushing her to her physical limits. During a formation, General Sorrengail criticizes Violet's wielding progress and questions her power, coldly dismissing her and noting the
