Violet discovers she is a lightning wielder when her suppressed power finally manifests during the War Games. After learning her sister Mira survived Montserrat, she rides into battle on a newly designed saddle created by Xaden, uses time-manipulation magic with Andarna's help to save Liam from Jack Barlowe's attack, and then unleashes lightning that kills Jack and destroys the tower he stands on.

Violet waits outside Professor Markham's office to learn whether her sister Mira survived the Montserrat outpost attack. Xaden arrives with coffee and they have an intimate conversation where she asks him personal questions to level their knowledge imbalance. On the day of the War Games, Fourth Wing faces First Wing in a battle where they must both defend a flag and steal an egg. Xaden reveals he commissioned a custom saddle for Tairn to help Violet maintain her seat, addressing her physical limitations. During the mission, First Wing dragons attack. When Jack Barlowe stabs Liam and kicks him off Deigh's back, Violet desperately calls on Andarna to help her freeze time so Tairn can catch him. In the desperate aerial battle, Violet's long-suppressed power finally manifests as lightning magic. She channels it toward Jack on the tower, killing him and destroying the structure. Tairn confirms her identity as a lightning wielder.
