Chapter 47

Violet is poisoned by a venin's green-tipped dagger during a massive battle at the Archives and becomes magically cut off from her dragons and her bond with Xaden. Paralyzed and bleeding black, she is transported by Xaden toward a mysterious location closer than the twelve-hour flight to Basgiath, despite warnings from his fellow riders about the risks involved.

The chapter opens with Violet falling during the Archives battle until Andarna, a smaller wyvern, catches her mid-air by stopping time, though she lacks the strength to carry Violet fully. Xaden catches Violet as she falls and discovers she has been poisoned by a green-tipped dagger wielded by a venin. Violet loses consciousness, unable to access her magic or mental pathways to her dragons. She awakens in severe pain with her blood turning black, a sign of poison that Imogen recognizes as critical. Her arm is broken, and she is dying. Xaden announces they will fly to someone closer than Basgiath—a decision that alarms Garrick and others, who warn it will put everything at risk, though Imogen notes that if Violet dies, Xaden will likely die too due to their bond. Despite the objections, Xaden orders the group to ride. During the flight over the Cliffs of Dralor, Violet drifts in and out of consciousness, the poison burning through her veins and slowing her heartbeat. She learns through overheard conversation that Soleil and Liam are dead, and she blames herself for Liam's death, believing Dain manipulated her memories and used them against him. As they approach their destination, Xaden tells Violet she must fight to live, declaring he won't let her die and that she means more to him than she realizes. Violet remains skeptical, tormented by guilt and pain, uncertain whether she will survive.
