AFTERWORD

Chapter 5

Chapter Six

Overview

Murderbot accompanies Station Security investigator Aylen and Port Authority supervisor Gamila to the cargo ship Lalow to investigate a stalled cargo transfer. When the crew takes them hostage, Murderbot intervenes forcefully. The subsequent interrogation reveals the Lalow was smuggling refugees—people escaping indentured servitude from the mining corporate BreharWallHan—with Lutran serving as their contact for the next step of their escape route. However, the refugees mysteriously disappear within the Merchant Docks, and Murderbot pushes for access to Station Security systems to investigate whether the surveillance systems have been compromised.

Summary

Murderbot accompanies Aylen, Gamila, and Station Security officers to investigate the Lalow, a cargo ship that has failed to respond to Port Authority communications. The crew of the Lalow, led by individuals the crew calls "Targets," takes Aylen and Gamila hostage when they board. Murderbot breaches the hatch and subdues the armed crew members with minimal force, rescuing the two officials. At Station Security headquarters, interrogation of the detainees reveals they operate a smuggling route for contract laborers from BreharWallHan, a mining corporate. Lutran served as their contact to arrange the next phase of the refugees' escape. When shown images of Lutran, the detainees react with recognition and fear, revealing that if Lutran has been killed, the smuggling operation is compromised. The Port Authority's initial cargo scan found the Lalow's containers empty with no record of cargo being offloaded. When Murderbot reviews dock surveillance video, it discovers that the ten refugees who disembarked from the Lalow never appear on any exit cameras—they vanish somewhere within the Merchant Docks. This suggests either a sophisticated disappearance or possible interference with the surveillance systems themselves. Indah, the senior Station Security investigator, initially resists Murderbot's request for admin access to check the systems for hacking, citing existing data protections. Murderbot demonstrates its capability by temporarily taking control of the office displays and showing footage from an officer's vest camera, forcing Indah to acknowledge the system vulnerability and grant access.
