The chapter opens with Violet and Xaden's passionate encounter in what appears to be the gathering hall. Their intimacy is interrupted when Xaden reveals his terror during the hour he believed Violet was in danger beyond the wards during the Samara attack. He struggles with a loss of control he's never experienced, explaining that she is the only person capable of stripping him of his composure. Despite his internal conflict, they agree to work through the issue together. Xaden then asks Violet about what was omitted from the Samara report, and she reveals that the dark wielder wielded lightning, suggesting venin may possess signets rather than being limited to lesser magics. Xaden believes her immediately. The narrative then shifts forward a week. Violet receives a letter from Xaden via Imogen, revealing he experienced a near-burnout during fighting in Fervan and has locked himself in his quarters to recover, waiting for his eyes to return to normal—a sign of his channeling. Concerned, Violet prepares to visit the imprisoned Jack with Imogen to seek information about venin. In the interrogation chamber, Violet negotiates with the dying Jack, offering him an alloy medallion imbued with power in exchange for answers. Jack reveals that venin can sense each other when newly turned, questions whether hidden channelers walk among the riders at Basgiath, and states that experienced wielders like dragon riders can turn without instruction by bypassing magical gatekeepers. He insists there is no cure for channeling, only acceptance of the trade-off between autonomy and power. When Violet asks why he answered her questions, Jack reveals he did so for the sadistic pleasure of reminding her of her torture in that same cell, claiming he can feel the residual pain of her suffering. Violet responds with emotional fortitude, and she and Imogen prepare to leave. Rhiannon, Ridoc, and Sawyer are found waiting in the tunnel as they emerge.
