Chapter 127

Violist and her team arrive at the Cliffs of Dralor to meet Theophanie's deadline for a prisoner exchange. They descend into a massive military siege at Draithus, where Theophanie has captured Mira and the dragon Teine as leverage, demanding Violist surrender herself and the imprisoned Jack in exchange for their lives.

Violist and Tairn fly toward the Cliffs of Dralor with Sgaeyl, Cuir, and Marbh in tow, racing against Theophanie's deadline. During the flight, Tairn reminds Violist that she is a weapon essential to winning the war, and that sacrifices will be made in her name. As they descend near Draithus, Violist observes the eastern fields covered in gray wyvern besieging the city's defenses—dragon and gryphon forces appear badly outnumbered. Aaric Molvic is spotted flying south away from the conflict. They land in the northern field where Theophanie waits with a dozen wyvern holding Teine captive with heavy chains coated in his blood. Mira stands beside her, severely beaten with bruises covering her face and throat. Violist dismounts as Brennan, Xaden, and Bodhi approach on foot. Theophanie reveals that Violist has lost her irid and taunts her about which emotional catalyst will turn her to darkness—saving Mira, defending Xaden, or revenge. Garrick arrives on Chradh carrying the runed armoire containing Jack. When Garrick opens it, Theophanie confirms Jack is inside, sedated and weakened. She then breaks her word, stating she promised only that Draithus would stand, not that Mira would live, and slits Mira's throat with her blade.
