Chapter Eight

Trapped in a blackout zone with their shuttle, Murderbot and their human crew accept an invitation from the separatist colonists to shelter inside an ancient installation during worsening weather, while Barish-Estranza's presence complicates negotiations and Murderbot grapples with recent psychological damage from an altered memory.

Murderbot's team must contend with the arrival of a Barish-Estranza exploration shuttle, which compromises their covert presence. While the humans attempt to negotiate with separatist colonist leader Trinh via communication, Murderbot scouts the installation's corridors to locate the B-E shuttle, discovering it houses a SecUnit standing guard. Iris appeals to Trinh about B-E's corporate exploitation motives, though the colonists have no reason to trust these new arrivals either. When weather conditions deteriorate and pathfinder communications begin failing, Trinh extends an invitation for the group to shelter inside the installation overnight, ostensibly to arrange an in-person meeting. Murderbot accepts despite security concerns. During the journey through lit corridors to their assigned quarters, the humans discuss limited options: potentially helping colonists secure their charter rights and establishing a University research presence at the drop box station. Murderbot struggles with self-recrimination over recent memory corruption and fails to ensure the exhausted crew had proper sleep before arrival. After settling in the quarters, Tarik and Ratthi argue about relationship boundaries while Murderbot maintains watch. The chapter ends with Trinh contacting them to report that Barish-Estranza now demands an in-person meeting with one of their group.
