Chapter Two

Murderbot awakens to 80% efficiency and is summoned by Dr. Mensah to investigate a discrepancy in the hazard report. The team discovers that a subreport on dangerous fauna has been deleted from the survey package, and further investigation reveals six missing sections from the planetary map. Mensah proposes that the team investigate one of the missing areas, and Murderbot volunteers to accompany them despite preferring isolation.

Murderbot regains consciousness and finds Mensah has extended the security interdict on the habitat for four more hours. Called to report to Mensah, Murderbot discovers the team gathered around a console examining the hazard report. When Murderbot emerges from its cubicle without armor, the team fails to recognize it, creating an awkward moment. Mensah asks Murderbot to examine the hazard report for the region, suspecting data has been altered. Murderbot's analysis confirms that a subreport on fauna has been deleted—something that should be impossible with standard survey packages. The team reacts with frustration and concern. Later, Mensah sends Murderbot images showing that six entire sections are missing from the planetary satellite map, discovered by Pin-Lee and Gurathin. Murderbot privately opines the survey package is likely cheap and error-ridden rather than deliberately hacked. The team debates whether to wait for DeltFall's copy of the missing files or investigate immediately. Mensah decides they will investigate, and when she reopens the feed to announce this, Murderbot volunteers to accompany the team, citing security protocols and its governor module's requirement to stay within a hundred meters of at least one client.
