The group establishes a hidden camp in a jungle region to evade their pursuers. Murderbot retrieves data from hidden drones at the abandoned habitat, discovering that the attackers are from GrayCris and have left a message offering to negotiate at specified coordinates.

After determining that the attackers know all their previous assessment locations, the team relocates to a remote jungle area with dense fauna that confuses scanning. Mensah persuades Murderbot to lower its helmet visor so the team can see its face, saying they need to think of it as a person helping them rather than merely a robot. Later, Mensah reveals through private feed communication that Murderbot is crucial to the team's survival because it won't panic. During a meeting in the hopper, the team discusses the blanked-out map sections and speculates about what EvilSurvey wants. Murderbot reveals it left three drones at the habitat recording audio and video. Ratthi mentions in private conversation with Murderbot that Dr. Mensah is the admin director of the Preservation Alliance steering committee, making her a political entity whose disappearance would trigger thorough investigations and substantial company liability. The next afternoon, Murderbot takes the small hopper back toward the habitat to retrieve drone data, accompanied by Mensah, Pin-Lee, Ratthi, and Gurathin. During the flight, Gurathin questions Murderbot about being punished for the mining team deaths, and Murderbot explains it was shut down and memory-purged rather than destroyed due to cost. Upon reaching the habitat at night, Murderbot successfully retrieves data from all three drones. The footage shows a newer hopper belonging to GrayCris landing, deploying five SecUnits (two from the destroyed DeltFall team and three GrayCris units) and five armed humans in field suits. The team reviews footage revealing the attackers are not professional soldiers. Most critically, audio from the drone hidden in the hub captures a female voice offering payment or negotiation at specific coordinates and a set time, stating the situation doesn't have to end in violence. The team realizes the attackers believe the survey team knows why they're being hunted, likely due to data collected from unmapped regions, giving the team unexpected leverage. Murderbot then has an idea.
