Chapter 5
Chapter Five
Overview
Murderbot awakens after its combat override module is removed by the team. When a crew member accuses it of sabotage, Murderbot reveals it has a hacked governor module and explains its past mass killing as a malfunction—not malice. The team realizes HubSystem itself has been compromised by an unknown third party and is actively sabotaging them. They evacuate the habitat in both hoppers as hostile forces approach from the south, with Murderbot leading the escape.
Summary
Murderbot regains consciousness to discover its combat override module has been surgically removed by Pin-Lee and Overse while it was unconscious. A diagnostic reveals its governor module is hacked. When Gurathin accuses Murderbot of being a rogue agent working for the company, Volescu and Bharadwaj defend it, but Murderbot must explain its past: it killed fifty-seven people in a mining operation due to a malfunctioning governor module, then hacked the replacement to prevent it happening again. Mensah commands respect by remaining calm during the confrontation and asks Murderbot to continue protecting them. Murderbot reveals that HubSystem has been compromised and is actively sabotaging the team—it aborted a medical assistance command during Hostile One's attack and caused the hopper autopilot to fail. The team learns a third, unknown survey group is operating on the planet, likely responsible for DeltFall's destruction. Pin-Lee and Gurathin shut down HubSystem and trigger the emergency beacon. When Volescu unpacks a satellite download meant for Murderbot, it contains instructions to take control of Murderbot and grant access to critical systems. The team rapidly evacuates both hoppers with supplies. Murderbot's drones detect the beacon has been destroyed and lose contact with a perimeter drone. Hostile forces are incoming from the south. Both hoppers launch and flee westward toward distant mountains, with Murderbot's remaining drones sent northeast as a decoy.
