Overview

Violet and Xaden argue about the secret of his identity that Rhiannon discovered, then commit to breaking into the Archives that night to steal journals about wardstone construction. They recruit a team including the reluctant Aaric, whose help is essential to the plan, and successfully infiltrate the Archives disguised as scribes before discovering a hidden staircase leading deeper into restricted sections.

Summary

Xaden confronts Violet about Rhiannon and others knowing his secret, initially angry but ultimately agreeing to help her steal journals from the Archives that might contain information on building wardstones—essential to protecting Aretia before war comes. Violet reveals they have months at most before the truth emerges. After an intense kiss, Xaden leaves to recruit additional help, returning with Bodhi, Rhiannon, Imogen, Quinn, Ridoc, and Sawyer. Aaric arrives, and tension erupts when it's revealed that Xaden killed Aaric's brother Alic. Xaden forces Aaric out into the hallway, but Violet later convinces Aaric to join by appealing to his hatred of his father. The group descends into the infirmary tunnels wearing scribe robes. At the Archives entrance, they encounter the sleeping guard Nasya and Jesinia, who limits the infiltration team to only four people plus Xaden (who refuses to wear a disguise). A young scribe cadet nearly discovers them, but Xaden uses his shadow signet to intimidate the cadet while Jesinia deflects suspicion with sharp words. Deeper inside, Jesinia leads them to a hidden classroom where she reveals a secret entrance—a rotating bookcase concealing a steep spiral staircase. With forty-five minutes before the Archives seal for the night, the team prepares to descend.
