In the aftermath of the successful defense against the wyvern army, Violet learns that her mother sacrificed herself to power the wardstone, dying in the process. As she reunites with her friends and allies in the courtyard, she discovers that Xaden has killed his father and is now displaying a red ring in his eyes—a sign of venin corruption.

The chapter opens with Violet, Mira, and Brennan emerging from the ward chamber after General Lilith Sorrengail's death. As they process their grief and move through the tower, Violet receives confirmation from Tairn that Xaden is alive. Emerging into the courtyard, they witness the celebration of victory, though Violet remains numb. Dain approaches, followed by Rhiannon, who confirms the wyvern army has been routed and venin are being hunted. Violet learns that most of her companions sustained only minor injuries. When Rhiannon comforts her after learning of her mother's death, Violet begins to process her grief. Violet then seeks out Tairn and Xaden near the ravine's edge. Tairn insists Andarna speak with him urgently. Violet finds Xaden staring into the ravine and learns he killed his father during the battle, snapping the tether his father had placed on him. When Violet expresses sorrow about her mother's death and Xaden apologizes, she reveals that her mother had Sloane siphon Aimsir's power to strengthen the wardstone. Xaden insists he never wanted her dead. Melgren has requested their return to the kingdom, and Xaden agrees, noting that Aretia's wards are weakening while the ones at this location remain strong. He suggests Violet will be safer here under full wards, but when she questions what could frighten her after the day's events, Xaden slowly turns to face her. As he looks into her eyes, Violet sees a faint red ring encircling his irises—a mark of venin corruption—and he tells her she should be afraid of him.
