AFTERWORD

Chapter 48

Chapter Fifty-Three

Overview

Violet and Xaden have an intimate encounter in the throne room of Tyrrendor after Violet's confrontation with Cat. Xaden reassures Violet of his love and commitment, then has a serious conversation with her about emotional control, revealing that Cat can only amplify existing feelings rather than create new ones, and that Violet's enchanted daggers protect her from Cat's empathic influence.

Summary

Following a heated physical altercation with Cat Warleigh, Violet is consumed by anger, jealousy, and insecurity. Xaden finds her and attempts to comfort her through intimate physical connection on the throne room chair. During their encounter, Xaden deliberately restrains himself from full reciprocation to prove to Violet that she is the center of his world, not merely a convenient outlet. After helping Violet dress, Xaden addresses Cat's claims directly: he was betrothed to Cat for roughly nine months when they were incompatible, and he has never loved anyone but Violet. He clarifies important distinctions about their relationship and confronts Violet's feelings of inferiority, insisting that she must take ownership of her own emotions rather than blaming Cat for amplifying them. Xaden reveals that Cat cannot manipulate emotions unless they already exist within Violet, and that the enchanted daggers with intertwined Vs that he gave her last year protect her from Cat's empathic gift. He also discloses that he is technically the Duke of Aretia by birth, though he prefers the battlefield to governance. Xaden urges Violet to regain emotional control and find her center, comparing her struggle to how she overcame challenges before. The chapter ends with Xaden requesting that Violet come to bed early, and both returning to their daily obligations with their relationship reaffirmed.
