Chapter 11
Chapter 11
Overview
Carl and Donut face off against six Mold Lions summoned by Signet, an elite NPC trying to use Carl's blood as a sacrifice for her blood magic. After a intense battle involving protective shells, confusing fog, and zombie minions, they defeat all six lions. Signet reveals her quest involves Grimaldi, the circus owner she loved, and invites them to help with her assault. Back at the saferoom, Mordecai explains the nature of elites as scripted story NPCs controlled by writers, warning them about plot armor and the dangers of interfering with established narratives.
Summary
Carl, Donut, and Mongo are cornered by six Mold Lions (transformed circus lions infused with parasitic mold) on a street near the circus while Signet, a half-naiad elite NPC, claims to summon her battle squad. Signet positions Carl as her defender but actually intends to use him as a blood sacrifice—her summoning magic requires a creature's death to animate her tattoos into minions. When the lions attack, Carl deploys a two-part strategy: Protective Shell to bounce the lions away, followed by Donut's Confusing Fog spell. He traps one lion against a wall and brutally kills it by punching through its chest and ripping out its heart. Using Donut's Second Chance spell, he reanimates the lion as a zombie minion. Donut then uses Clockwork Triplicate to create additional automatons, and together they systematically defeat the remaining five lions. Signet's spell never activates because she requires a willing sacrifice and cannot use the lions' blood herself. After the fight, Signet reveals her backstory involves Grimaldi, the circus owner she loved, and offers to share details if Carl helps with tomorrow's assault. She arranges to meet them the following night after summoning her squad. Back at the Belly-Rubbed Pug saferoom, Mordecai angrily chastises them for accepting the quest despite his earlier advice. He explains that elites are artificial NPCs designed by writers to enact predetermined storylines, constantly nudged by AI and susceptible to hot patches if narratives go wrong. He warns that elites have thick plot armor and crawlers are expendable extras in their dramas, advising them to avoid elite quests entirely. The group watches a recap episode showing other crawlers' race and class selections, including the fearsome Lucia Mar who chose the Lajabless race (a shape-shifting form between beauty and skeletal horror) and a triple class called Black Inquisitor General. Mordecai emphasizes that despite Lucia's odd appearance, she is likely the most powerful crawler in the game. An announcement reminds crawlers not to attack non-combatant NPCs and notes increased interest in the sponsorship program.
