AFTERWORD

Chapter 27

It’s that time again.

Overview

Carl and Donut escape the collapsing municipal building with a charred glass case containing a plush creature called Kimaris. They encounter Daniel Bautista, a Tigran Swashbuckler whose family was killed by lemurs at the circus, and learn that Bautista's failed quest involved killing Miss Quill. After three hours of preparation, Carl and Donut approach the warehouse to confront Remex, the lich believed responsible for the prostitutes' deaths, only to discover upon entering that Remex is not actually a lich.

Summary

Carl retrieves the rope from his inventory and crashes onto the debris pile as the municipal building collapses around them. He discovers an enchanted glass case containing a plush armored man on a black horse labeled "Kimaris" among the ruins. They escape just as the building caves in. Donut notes they still lack the full story behind the prostitutes' disappearances despite knowing they fell into alleys via the building. Carl senses Remex on the second floor of the warehouse across the street and determines they must confront him to complete the quest. A player-controlled Tigran crawler named Daniel Bautista approaches them. After some awkwardness about looted items from his dead family members, Bautista reveals he is the cousin of Grace, Nica, and Lea—three of the five family members killed by lemurs at the circus. His other cousin died the next day from despair. He thanks Carl and Donut for avenging them and adds his contact information to their chat list before departing. Donut and Carl discuss their life aspirations; Carl reveals he would have preferred to work as a forester, while Donut dreams of writing television shows with Zev. They decide to confront the lich that night, giving them approximately three hours before dawn. Carl spends nearly an hour constructing a rickety ladder and places ten sticks of dynamite around the warehouse exterior. Fitz the tavernkeeper raises an alarm, and a crowd of NPCs gathers to defend the city. Carl entrusts the detonator to Katia with instructions to blow the building if things go wrong, framing it as mutually assured destruction. He and Donut enter the warehouse, carefully avoid the dormant Swordsmen guards in stasis mode, and ascend through a trap door. Inside the upper room, they discover Remex is not a lich at all but something else entirely, cowering in the far corner.
