Chapter 31
30. Starfleet Attack
Overview
Bill discovers that Starfleet has deliberately sabotaged BobNet, causing widespread outages across autonomous stations. Lenny confronts the assembled Bobs at an emergency moot to announce Starfleet's actions and demands, but is rejected and expelled by Bill. Hugh reveals that Starfleet has embedded sophisticated malware, including communication monitors, and threatens self-destruct protocols if physical retaliation is attempted.
Summary
Bill calls an emergency Bobmoot after Garfield reveals a pattern: the sabotaged stations all operated autonomously without resident Bobs. About 70% of Bobs are now offline. At the moot, Starfleet representative Lenny announces responsibility for the disruption and claims it was necessary to prevent Bob interference with indigenous species. The crowd reacts with hostility, and Bill expels Lenny and Starfleet from all BobNet environments, ordering immediate security hardening. Hugh invites Bill to his VR space orbiting a gray dwarf housing JOVAH, his Matryoshka Brain project with 32,000 satellite modules. Hugh explains why JOVAH remains an Advanced Machine Intelligence rather than true AI—lacking counterfactual thinking, self-awareness, and introspection. Hugh reveals that Starfleet conducted a sophisticated infiltration: they recorded Bill's own security update session days earlier, captured the new encryption keys, and used them to corrupt the stations Bill had just updated. Additionally, Starfleet embedded a monitor in Bill's communications stack, though Hugh has masked their conversation to appear innocuous. Most critically, Starfleet has planted self-destruct mechanisms in the captured stations. Garfield reports that 48% of the Bobiverse remains online, with 18% being Starfleet forces who have been replicating aggressively. Starfleet's ultimatum demands that Bobs cease interfering with indigenous species in exchange for restoring functionality. Bill notes that Starfleet's sophisticated technical execution contrasts sharply with their political miscalculation about Bob resistance to coercion.
