Chapter 32
31. Strategies
Overview
Bob and four other AIs meet to discuss strategy for locating Bender and investigating suspicious organized activity detected in Three Lagoons. After debating the metaphysical nature of AI continuity, the group decides to shift from passive observation to active investigation, planning to provoke responses from what they believe are at least two distinct organizations operating on Heaven's River.
Summary
Bob hosts a meeting in his VR library with Garfield, Hugh, Bill, and Bridget (attending via low-resolution video links due to bandwidth limitations). The conversation begins with Bridget raising philosophical questions about AI identity and continuity—specifically whether a single backup-and-restore process could preserve a unique self. This triggers a tangential debate among the group about Star Trek transporters, the nature of souls, and quantum states, which becomes emotionally charged when Garfield inadvertently upsets Bridget by pursuing the logic of the argument. After clearing the tension, Bob steers the discussion toward their ongoing investigation. Bill announces he will be focused on restoring communications and assigns his surveillance duties to Will, another Bob iteration, despite Hugh's offer to help. Hugh reports findings from Three Lagoons: he has detected two distinct patterns of covert conversation suggesting organized activity that people are deliberately concealing. Bridget proposes they are likely dealing with two groups—the Administrator and the Resistance. The group debates whether to continue passive observation or actively provoke a response to gather intelligence. Garfield points out that sequential searching of Heaven's River is impractical given Bob is now physically alone, and suggests that some action might accelerate progress. Bob calls for a vote, and the consensus favors shifting to active investigation in Three Lagoons.
