Chapter 1
PART ONE: STRUCTURE
Overview
A prologue establishing a world in ecological and spiritual collapse, where crops rot, fish die diseased, and wisdom has lost its meaning. In one village at the foot of a great mountain, a boy named Ke observes the twin world in the night sky and gives it a new name: Anjiin.
Summary
The world is gripped by widespread sickness and decay. Crops fail in the fields, fish pulled from the water are dying and covered in sores, and the words of elders and ancestors no longer carry meaning or provide solace. A universal truth spreads across all people: their home is dying. This sickness brings grief that smothers the fields, rage that drives away the fish, and doubt that silences the voices offering wisdom. Hopelessness spreads across the nations, and no one sees a future beyond the rot and decay. However, in one village situated at the foot of a great mountain, a boy named Ke exists. Looking up at the night sky, Ke observes that the brightest light is not a star but the twin world created when the Great Heron split the sky. This light had previously been known by another name, but Ke sees it and names it anew: Anjiin.
