Chapter 8
Seven
Overview
The swarm reveals its true nature to Dafyd by exposing the black microagents beneath its skin, explaining that it is both Else (who died) and Jellit (the spy) merged into one consciousness. As Dafyd struggles to process this revelation, Rak-hund and Soft Lothark soldiers arrive, but instead of attacking, they inform him that the Carryx has assigned them as guards for his protection. The moment of connection between Dafyd and the swarm shatters as Dafyd's horror becomes clear, and the swarm must leave.
Summary
The swarm, inhabiting Dafyd's presence, reveals its composite nature by rolling up its sleeve to show the black microagents coherent beneath its skin. It explains that Else did not truly die—her consciousness merged with Jellit's spy body into a single entity that is now addressing him. The swarm tries to convince Dafyd of this by recalling intimate details of Else's memories, particularly their first kiss on Anjiin before an attack. Dafyd reacts with shock and revulsion, repeatedly backing away and asking if Else ever existed as a separate entity. When Dafyd demands "What the hell are you?" the swarm hears approaching footfalls and detects the arrival of a Rak-hund and four Soft Lothark emerging from the shadows. Internally convinced they have been overheard and will be killed, the swarm prepares to fight. However, the Soft Lothark reveal they have been sent as guards assigned by the Carryx to protect Dafyd and maintain his physical security after recent violence. One Rak-hund is specifically designated to prevent unwelcome violence and eliminate threats of lesser status at Dafyd's direction. The soldiers' arrival and unexpected protective role create an awkward barrier to further explanation between Dafyd and the swarm. Dafyd, now frightened and confused, tells the swarm to leave, and the swarm, recognizing it cannot bridge the gulf of understanding in this moment, departs through the archway.
