Chapter Fifty-One

Two days after returning from the mountains, Nesta continues training with Cassian, Gwyn, and Emerie, attempting to pass the Valkyrie test of cutting a ribbon in two. Frustrated by repeated failures, Nesta channels her energy into physical intimacy with Cassian in his bedroom, where they engage in passionate encounters. Over the following week, Nesta continues her nightly visits to Cassian's room while also attempting to descend the stairs to the city—always stopping midway—and practicing with shields alongside her companions. Nesta still avoids confronting Feyre. While researching Valkyrie tactics in the library, Gwyn approaches Nesta and invites her to evening services featuring ancient music and songs. When Nesta hesitantly reveals her struggle with self-destructive behavior after the war—her drinking and casual sexual encounters in taverns and pleasure halls—and her concern that others will judge her, Gwyn responds with compassion rather than condemnation. Gwyn cryptically alludes to her own hidden history and assures Nesta she will always be welcome. Nesta agrees to attend the service, and Gwyn's acceptance provides her unexpected emotional relief.
