Chapter Sixty-One

Nesta completes her final self-imposed test by descending thousands of stairs and mastering the Mind-Stilling technique, then chooses to return to Cassian and the Starfall celebration rather than escape into the city. At the party, she witnesses the beauty of the stars, reconciles with Amren, and learns she has unknowingly Made the House of Wind alive through her desperate longing for friendship.

Nesta descends the House's stairs in a grueling solo test, counting thousands of steps while practicing the Mind-Stilling meditation technique to achieve mental calm amid physical chaos. She reaches the bottom and exits into the city at dusk, momentarily tempted by the freedom to drink herself into oblivion at a tavern. Instead, she chooses to climb back up toward Cassian and the Starfall party he invited her to attend. Cassian meets her at the stairwell entrance, and she kisses him before he carries her exhausted body up to the rooftop celebration. There, surrounded by the Night Court's gathered members, Nesta becomes overwhelmed by the beauty of thousands of stars streaking across the sky, weeping with joy and wonder at the world's beauty and her own aliveness. Amren approaches her and Nesta, moved by emotion, kneels and apologizes for her past treatment of the female, acknowledging her jealousy and pride. Amren reveals that Nesta has Made the House of Wind itself alive through her subconscious wish born from loneliness when she first arrived. She explains that Nesta's power, previously understood as destructive, created something good, and that managing one's inner darkness rather than being consumed by it is the true mastery. Amren welcomes Nesta back to the Night Court as the chapter concludes.
