Chapter 13

Chapter 14: Mars: SpaceX, 2001

Overview

Elon arrives in Canada at age 17 with minimal funds and navigates early hardship as an immigrant, working difficult jobs while his family reunites in Toronto. The chapter establishes his resourcefulness and work ethic during his formative years in North America before his entrepreneurial ventures.

Summary

Elon arrives in Montreal in 1989 with only $4,000 in traveler's checks from his parents—his father Errol contributed $2,000 and his mother Maye provided $2,000 from cashed stock. The myth that he came with emerald wealth is false. After a week in a youth hostel, he purchases a $100 Greyhound Discovery Pass to travel across Canada. He visits his second cousin Mark Teulon's wheat farm in Saskatchewan, where he loses his suitcase containing traveler's checks and clothes when a bus driver departs prematurely, leaving him only his knapsack of books. The difficulty replacing the checks highlights to him how the financial system needs disruption. He later moves to Vancouver, where he works cleaning boilers in a lumber mill at $18 per hour—hazardous work involving a hazmat suit and shoveling lime from confined spaces. Meanwhile, Maye decides to immigrate and scouts Canadian cities, ultimately choosing Toronto as the best option. Tosca sells their South African house and furniture to follow. The family initially shares a one-bedroom apartment with Maye and Tosca in one bed and Elon on the couch. Money is tight; Maye works multiple jobs and cries over spilled milk due to scarcity. As their finances improve, they move to a rent-controlled three-bedroom apartment, purchase a thicker carpet for $300, and buy Elon a computer. Kimbal remains in Pretoria to finish high school but later joins them in Toronto. Elon has no social life, spending time reading or on his computer, while Tosca is more socially outgoing. He trails behind her to clubs and parties, staying ten feet away as she insists, reading while she socializes.
