Chapter 3

Chapter 4: The Seeker: Pretoria, the 1980s

Overview

This chapter traces Elon Musk's family ancestry, focusing on his maternal grandfather Joshua Haldeman—a risk-taking adventurer who moved to South Africa in 1950—and his father Errol Musk, an engineer and entrepreneur. It details how Elon's parents, Maye Haldeman and Errol Musk, met as teenagers, began dating amid drama and infidelity, and married impulsively after Errol proposed during a visit to Cape Town, with Maye becoming pregnant on their honeymoon night.

Summary

Joshua Haldeman, Elon's maternal grandfather, embodied risk-taking and adventure. Raised on Canadian plains, he worked as a cowboy, hobo, and stowaway before buying and losing a farm during the 1930s Depression. He became involved in populist and technocratic political movements, married Winnifred Fletcher (herself adventurous), and the family became known as "The Flying Haldemans," piloting planes across continents. Motivated by a charlatan's tales of a lost city in the Kalahari, Joshua moved the family to Pretoria, South Africa in 1950. He was killed in a plane crash when Elon was three. Elon's mother, Maye Haldeman, inherited her father's risk appetite and became a model and science student. Errol Musk, Elon's father, was an ambitious engineer and developer who invested in hotels, shopping centers, and planes. He also traded in emeralds from Zambian mines in semi-legal dealings until the market collapsed in the 1980s. Maye and Errol met as teenagers and dated turbulently; Maye discovered his infidelities multiple times. After Maye graduated from college, Errol proposed in Cape Town. Despite her doubts about his faithfulness, Maye accepted and they married. During their honeymoon in France, Errol looked at contraband Playboy magazines while Maye grew frustrated. She became pregnant on the second night of their honeymoon in Nice, trapping her in a marriage she had come to regret.
