At ten, Elon makes the consequential choice to move from Durban with his mother Maye to live with his father Errol in suburban Pretoria, driven by paternal loneliness and his grandmother Nana's persuasion that it is unfair his father has no children. He finds Errol charismatic—swaggering, well-read, equipped with tools and encyclopedias—but later recognizes the arrangement as deeply harmful. Kimbal follows two years later, also manipulated by their father. The boys help Errol construct a tourist lodge in the Timbavati Game Reserve east of Pretoria, sleeping by fire and protecting against lions, with Elon becoming a skilled marksman. Errol takes them on a 1980s American road trip (accounts differ on whether Disney World was visited) and a Hong Kong trip where he abandons them in a hotel for days—experiences Elon finds wondrous rather than abusive by modern standards. Maye relocates to Johannesburg and arranges Friday pickups, with Elon and Kimbal staying with their grandmother and cousins Peter, Lyndon, and Russ Rive at Maye's sister Kaye's house. A formative book in Errol's office describes future inventions including ion thrusters, igniting Elon's fascination with space travel.
