Chapter 7

Chapter 8: Penn: Philadelphia, 1992–1994

Overview

Young Elon moves in with his father Errol at age ten—a decision he later regrets—and spends four formative years in Pretoria helping build a safari lodge while developing a fearless, competitive personality. He excels academically at a private school, pursues entrepreneurial schemes with his cousins, and becomes absorbed in reading, engineering experiments, and video games, laying early groundwork for his future ambitions.

Summary

At ten, Elon makes the consequential choice to move from Durban with his mother Maye to live with his father Errol in suburban Pretoria, driven by paternal loneliness and his grandmother Nana's persuasion that it is unfair his father has no children. He finds Errol charismatic—swaggering, well-read, equipped with tools and encyclopedias—but later recognizes the arrangement as deeply harmful. Kimbal follows two years later, also manipulated by their father. The boys help Errol construct a tourist lodge in the Timbavati Game Reserve east of Pretoria, sleeping by fire and protecting against lions, with Elon becoming a skilled marksman. Errol takes them on a 1980s American road trip (accounts differ on whether Disney World was visited) and a Hong Kong trip where he abandons them in a hotel for days—experiences Elon finds wondrous rather than abusive by modern standards. Maye relocates to Johannesburg and arranges Friday pickups, with Elon and Kimbal staying with their grandmother and cousins Peter, Lyndon, and Russ Rive at Maye's sister Kaye's house. The five cousins become inseparable adventurers, conspiring with the more indulgent Maye to sneak off to concerts and anti-apartheid protests in Johannesburg, where they witness violence and gang shootings on trains without developing fear but also prudence. Elon emerges as the most fearless and competitive cousin—confronting loud moviegoers, attacking his brothers when they cheated in a bicycle race, and fighting viciously over petty matters. At school, he is a competent but slow student, earning an 83 average before high school; teachers note daydreaming and unfinished work. After bullying and beatings at public school, Errol moves him to the prestigious Pretoria Boys High School, where he excels except in Afrikaans and religious instruction—subjects he deems meaningless. He pursues rockets using chlorine and brake fluid, learns magic and hypnosis, and reads his father's encyclopedias obsessively, often disappearing into libraries and bookstores. A formative book in Errol's office describes future inventions including ion thrusters, igniting Elon's fascination with space travel. With his cousins, he attempts entrepreneurial ventures like expensive homemade Easter eggs marketed as support for future capitalists.
