Chapter 11
10. Ophelia
Overview
Ophelia wakes to find her roommate Sofia dead in their bed with hemlock flowers in her mouth. Suspecting both Sofia and Alex of being involved in her mysterious harassment, she accuses Alex before discovering he may actually be helping her. When Chancellor Carmichael arrives to inform them of Sofia's death, Alex provides Ophelia with an alibi by claiming she was with him, forcing them into an uneasy alliance that crumbles when Ophelia finds evidence suggesting Alex sent the cryptic emails and may be her actual stalker.
Summary
Ophelia awakens from nightmares to realize Sofia is dead, adorned with white hemlock flowers. After finding a cryptic email signed "Alan Sine" quoting John Keats' "Ode to a Nightingale," she discovers Sofia's cold body. Alex arrives in the hallway moments later, soaking wet from outside, and initially accuses Ophelia of the murder. Realizing they both look equally suspicious, they agree to provide each other alibis. When voices approach, Alex hides Ophelia in his bedroom and stages a scene to make them appear as if they were together. Chancellor Carmichael arrives to announce Sofia's death and accepts their story without question, though his demeanor suggests he knows more than he reveals. After Carmichael leaves, Vincenzo Moretti arrives, confirming he will keep Sofia's death quiet and handle it internally. Ophelia remains in Alex's room while he and Vincenzo check on someone called Belladonna. While alone, Ophelia discovers a copy of Keats' Complete Works in Alex's bookshelf with "Ode to a Nightingale" bookmarked—the same poem from the email. Convinced Alex is her stalker and Sofia's killer, she attacks him, but he does not fight back. Vincenzo pulls her off, and Alex calmly explains she's in shock. Vincenzo makes a crude joke that Alex responds to with dark humor, highlighting how alien Ophelia feels to their dynamic. Devastated by Sofia's death and suspecting her presence caused it, emotionally shattered, Ophelia flees the mansion.
