Chapter 28
27. Ophelia
Overview
In the aftermath of killing Bancroft, Ophelia and Alex witness Vincenzo's crew dispose of the body in a forest glade. As the gruesome work unfolds, Ophelia grapples with the shocking realization that she enjoyed the kill, while Alex provides quiet comfort and reassurance.
Summary
Ophelia stands with Alex in a navy forest as they watch Vincenzo and his men systematically destroy evidence of Bancroft's death. Alex playfully deflects tension with banter about being "study buddies that bury bodies together," earning Ophelia's reluctant smile despite the horror unfolding around them. Vincenzo's crew scrubs Bancroft's blood from his office, forges a suicide note, and dismembers his body for disposal across multiple locations. Covered in both Bancroft's and her own blood, Ophelia experiences a disturbing moment of self-awareness: she is stronger and more resilient than before, and—most troublingly—she felt genuine pleasure when she drove the knife into Bancroft's abdomen. She acknowledges the moral weight of what she's done, recognizing she deserves prison, yet cannot deny the sharp thrill that overpowered her disgust in that moment. As the disposal nears completion, Alex holds her from behind, offering warmth and gentle kisses while she avoids watching the final stages. He asks only that she not shut him out when she spirals, and promises that anywhere is home as long as they're together.
