14. Ophelia

Ophelia travels to Scotland to meet Laura, the daughter of the helicopter engineer her father knew. Laura reveals that her father was coerced by Cain Green—CEO of Green Aviation—into sabotaging the helicopter after Laura was kidnapped and threatened, making him responsible for the crash that killed Ophelia's parents. Though Laura has evidence on a tape, she refuses to surrender it, leaving Ophelia with devastating knowledge but no actionable proof.

Ophelia rides with Eike, Colette's driver, through the Scottish Highlands toward a small village near Inverness. Despite her anxiety about the meeting ahead, she feels relief at being away from Sorrowsong's oppressive atmosphere. Eike stops at a petrol station and returns with Jelly Babies—a thoughtful gesture from Colette—before driving her to a run-down terrace house. Laura answers the door looking frail and anxious. Inside the cold, sparse home, Laura initially threatens Ophelia with a knife when Ophelia mentions the helicopter crash, but Ophelia's calm reassurance breaks through her panic. Laura then confesses everything: her father, a senior mechanic at Green Aviation, was ordered by Cain Green himself to loosen bolts on the helicopter's rotor hub. When her father refused, Green had Laura abducted and sent her father a video of her bound and gagged, forcing him to comply under threat. The sabotage killed one man—later revealed to be Ophelia's father. Laura's father left a tape before taking his own life out of guilt. When Ophelia asks for the tape as evidence, Laura refuses; it is her only remaining connection to her father and his voice saying goodnight to her each night. Devastated by this revelation and unable to act on it, Ophelia leaves in tears, her hope of concrete proof shattered.
