Chapter 20
19. Ophelia
Overview
Ophelia grapples with her conflicting feelings for Alex as he returns unexpectedly from New York. While Divya tends to her injuries and they work on identifying a stalker, Ophelia discovers that Alex possesses the mysterious brown folder she has been seeking—containing evidence related to her investigation into his father's company. She nearly surrenders to her desire for Alex but ultimately pulls back, tormented by the knowledge that she cannot be with him without revealing the truth about her past and her original mission to destroy his family.
Summary
Ophelia recovers at Alex's apartment with support from Divya, Vincenzo, and Colette. Three days after nearly drowning in the tarn, she remains physically weak but emotionally turbulent. She and Divya create a wall of caricatures mapping potential stalkers while discussing her complicated relationship with Alex. When Alex returns unexpectedly from New York—exhausted and damp from rain—he finds them laughing over the drawings. After Divya leaves, Ophelia and Alex engage in charged flirtation and wordplay, with Alex attempting to initiate intimacy. Ophelia resists, insisting it is "complicated," though she is deeply tempted. When Alex offers to help trace threatening emails using his technical skills, Ophelia notices he possesses a brown folder in his desk drawer—the very folder she has been searching for, which apparently contains "work stuff for my father." She realizes this discovery raises troubling questions: does Alex know about the helicopter crash? Was he complicit? As Alex identifies that the stalker emails came from a laptop on campus under the name "Alan Sine," Ophelia recognizes this as her mother's name but cannot reveal the connection. She concludes that to be with Alex, she must confess everything about her past, her parents, and her original intention to ruin his family—but doing so would destroy any possibility of their relationship.
