AFTERWORD

Chapter 14

Eleven

Overview

Ostencour leads a failed prison break attempt against the Soft Lothark guards. When one alien is attacked and killed, it explodes with caustic poison, incapacitating many prisoners including Dafyd. As the aliens consume their dead comrade and replace the fouled mat with a fresh one, the prisoners realize their captors operate on fundamentally inhuman logic—not seeking punishment, simply continuing their routine.

Summary

Dafyd, Else, Jessyn, and Campar debate Ostencour's plan for escape, which they view as doomed. Dafyd theorizes that their captors won't retaliate against a failed breakout because they've already demonstrated indifference to prisoner deaths by their initial capture and internment. Else goes to speak with Ostencour, returning without details but clear refusal. When the guards arrive, Synnia rushes toward them, and chaos erupts as Ostencour's followers attack one of the Soft Lothark, stabbing it with a makeshift knife. The alien's body responds with a violent defensive mechanism—it expands and ruptures, spraying caustic fluid that poisons everyone in contact with it. Ostencour, Synnia, and others experience severe chemical burns and poisoning. Rather than executing the prisoners as Dafyd feared, two more aliens enter, investigate the scene methodically, consume the corpse of their dead comrade, roll up and remove the soiled mat, and install a fresh one before leaving. Dafyd falls into fever delirium for several days. When he regains consciousness in the infirmary section, Else has been tending him. She reports that two prisoners died from the poison—one of Synnia's companions who had worse exposure, and a woman with an untreated heart condition. Ostencour's fever broke sooner. As Dafyd recovers, he reflects on a childhood lesson about anthropomorphism: a biology tutor had dissected a named beetle to show students that its reflexive eating of its own exposed organs proved it operated by instinct, not emotion like a human. He realizes he cannot apply human logic to understand his captors' behavior. Later, Jessyn sits with the catatonic Synnia, mechanically providing water and food. Ostencour approaches and asks to speak with Synnia, apologizing for his failed plan. He tells her they learned from the attempt and survived—that they are not defeated and the struggle continues.
