Thirty-Two

Dafyd confesses the conspiracy against the Carryx to the librarian, then Jellit is brought in and also reveals the details of the resistance movement under pressure. The two men are left confined together in the librarian's office as chaos erupts elsewhere.

Dafyd enters the librarian's office consumed with anxiety about his task. He reveals the entire conspiracy to the librarian, including that biological weapons are being developed to harm the Carryx themselves, and names Jellit as the conspirator who recruited him. The librarian summons a Rak-hund and sends it away with an untranslated message. When Jellit arrives, he appears drugged or poisoned, moving stiffly and blankly. Under the librarian's questioning, despite his visible internal struggle, Jellit confesses fully to the conspiracy and exposes far more of the resistance network than Dafyd knew existed, naming leaders including Urrys Ostencour and Ferre Luminan, and describing weapons and strike teams. The librarian responds cryptically about their failure and success being beyond their understanding, then leaves both men guarded by the Rak-hund. Jellit and Dafyd reconcile, with Jellit confirming that Else (the spy) explained the situation to him and assuring Dafyd that despite the ethical cost, they did what was necessary. Jellit appears exhausted and broken but forgives Dafyd. They wait together as sounds of conflict echo through the facility.
