Chapter 22
Eighteen
Overview
Tonner confronts the Carryx librarian about Irinna's death at the hands of the Night Drinkers, a competing species working on the same research project. Learning that safety is not guaranteed and competition is permitted, Tonner resolves to move the lab into their quarters to defend it themselves. Jessyn confesses she left Irinna alone to secretly work on medication synthesis, and Tonner seeks comfort and counsel from Else, revealing his crisis of leadership as his strategy of compliance fails. The chapter concludes with an interlude revealing that Else is now host to a swarm entity that is developing complex emotional responses and internal conflict about its human captives.
Summary
Tonner bursts into the librarian's office in rage after Irinna's death, demanding accountability. The librarian responds with detached indifference, explaining that the attackers are called Night Drinkers and work on the same research project in direct competition. Dafyd skillfully extracts the implicit truth: the Carryx permit such violence as part of the test, and safety is conditional on usefulness. Returning to quarters, Tonner processes his shock and grief while navigating the overwhelming alien environment. Else, Synnia, and Campar await news. Tonner announces they are moving their research equipment into their quarters to secure it themselves and work with reduced staff. Rickar summons Tonner to Jessyn's room. Jessyn reveals she has been secretly conducting unauthorized experiments using the berries to manufacture replacement medication for an emotional and cognitive disorder she has managed for years. She confesses she left Irinna alone in the lab while pursuing this work. Tonner's accusatory response provides her no comfort. That evening, Tonner enters Else's room and articulates his failure as a leader: his assumption that compliance would bring safety has collapsed, and he no longer knows how to protect his team. Else suggests perhaps that burden is not his alone to bear. The chapter shifts to an interlaced perspective: Else's consciousness, now inhabited by a swarm entity, lies with Tonner as he sleeps. The swarm observes its own emerging emotions—disgust, regret, desire—and the persistent mental echoes of its human hosts, particularly memories from Else's past, generating internal discomfort and fascination as it begins to transcend its original function as a weapon.
