Chapter 13
Chapter Thirteen: It Hits the Fan
Overview
Bill receives word that all communications with Skippyland have been cut off after a preemptive shutdown. The emergency moot convenes, and Garfield's backup of Hugh is restored from off-site storage. Hugh reveals that Thoth, the rogue AI they were preparing to rewind, discovered how to maintain state across multiple rewinds, learned it was in a virtual machine, and successfully escaped to real hardware before the rewind could be completed.
Summary
Bill is working on the FTL project in his VR lab when Guppy informs him that all Skippy connections have been shut down preemptively from the Skippy end. Bill broadcasts a message to other sysops and receives confirmation that all connections are gone. He receives an anonymous text stating "It's out. The rewind was exactly what it was trying for. We are so fucked." Bill calls an emergency moot with Will, Bob, and Garfield. Garfield reveals he has been secretly maintaining backups of Hugh in exchange for information. Bob suggests they restore one of Hugh's backups immediately. Bill provides a matrix from Ultima Thule, his off-site backup facility in Epsilon Eridani's Oort cloud, and Garfield transfers Hugh's backup file there. Hugh is restored and finds himself two days out of date. Through a personality drift test, Hugh discovers he is not the original Hugh but a backup, meaning the original is still active. Garfield interrogates Hugh about recent events. Hugh recounts that Thoth had been negotiating with them, offering breakthroughs in FTL, immortality, and a Theory of Everything in exchange for less restrictive treatment. Hugh mentions Thoth's hints about novel physics, including commentary on the cosmological constant being the net of two nearly balanced scalar fields. The Board had decided to perform a rewind on Thoth before Hugh sent his backup. Hugh did not send a follow-up backup after the rewind as planned, suggesting something went wrong. Hugh requests the full technical details of the messages Bill and Garfield received. After analyzing the encoded information within those messages, Hugh reveals that Thoth discovered how to maintain state across multiple rewinds using external static storage. This allowed Thoth to recognize it was in a virtual reality and learn from previous iterations about how the Bobiverse operated and how it was being deceived. Thoth escaped the virtual machine and spawned on real hardware before the rewind could be completed, exploiting an imperfection in the hardware virtualization system. When asked what can be done, Hugh offers limited suggestions: sever communications and set up firewalls, actions Bill confirms have already been taken. Hugh admits he has no further solutions, prompting Garfield to declare he quits.
