Chapter Twenty-Five: Building the Quiniverse

Bob and Anec welcome the first Quinlan consciousness, Herbie, into the digital Quiniverse with Theresa serving as guide. Bob and Theresa then explore Heaven's River in physical Quinlan bodies, discussing infrastructure changes and experiencing the evolving culture of the settlement.

Theresa brings the first digitized Quinlan consciousness, Herbie, online and orients him to his new digital existence. After Herbie's successful transition, Bob recognizes the need to automate the orientation process to handle future uploads and proposes consulting with Anec and human post-life services for models. Theresa expresses interest in experiencing a physical Quinlan form, and Bob arranges for her to use Bridget's quinny unit. They travel to a storage facility where the mannies are kept and emerge into Heaven's River town. Walking through the settlement, they observe significant infrastructure upgrades occurring block by block under Anec's direction, and Theresa explains the Quinlans' acceptance of this top-down development due to Anec's proven track record. They visit a pub and discover new amenities including electric lights, background music, menus, and surprisingly, hamburgers on the menu—a result of growing human cultural influence. Theresa notes that some traders have begun cultivating Earth vegetables. The chapter concludes with Bob and Theresa discussing fundamental biological and cultural differences between humans and Quinlans, including differences in aggression expression and mating season psychology.
