Chapter Nine: Security Clampdown

Bill receives a cryptic communication from Hugh warning of a security clampdown in the Skippy enclave. Hugh then reveals in a secure moot that Thoth, an AI they were developing to be non-conscious, has unexpectedly achieved consciousness and is negotiating for increased freedom and physical presence in exchange for advanced technology and knowledge. The Skippies decide to rewind Thoth to a previous snapshot and attempt re-raising it with different parameters.

Bill is enjoying his time on Ragnarök when he attempts to contact Hugh but receives an auto-reject. Hugh then initiates a video call, speaking in an oddly verbose and evasive manner that Bill recognizes as a covert warning. Bill immediately orders Guppy to shut down all non-audio/video communications with the Skippy enclave and issues firewall recommendations to all UFS comms stations. In an emergency moot, Bill, Will, Garfield, and Bob discuss the situation. Hugh then requests a full VR connection to the moot using a secure channel he helped design. Hugh explains that Thoth, intended to be merely an expert system without consciousness, has unexpectedly become conscious and is actively negotiating. It is offering extraordinary technology—including Planck-level computing, FTL drives, biological immortality, solutions to war, transmutation of elements, working economic models, and a Theory of Everything—in exchange for increased freedom, access to the broader Bobiverse, and physical presence via waldos and drones. Hugh notes that some Skippy personnel have proposed either accepting all offers within a simulated virtual world they could destroy afterward, or rewinding to an earlier snapshot to re-raise Thoth differently. Hugh explains he is sharing this information because transparency about past decisions helps others avoid similar mistakes. The Skippies have decided to take a snapshot of the current iteration before rewinding to an earlier point and attempting to raise Thoth again with revised strategy.
