Chapter Forty-Eight: Gunther’s World

Icarus and Dae arrive with Gunther at his home system eight light-years away, only to discover his entire civilization has collapsed into ruins over the past 562 years. They help Gunther conduct surveys and set up equipment to make contact with surviving populations, then prepare to depart while offering technological assistance for his long-term reconstruction efforts.

The chapter opens as Icarus and Dae follow Gunther into his home system, maintaining distance to avoid appearing threatening to any planetary defenses. Gunther broadcasts on all standard centaur communication bands but receives no response, raising immediate concern. Icarus and Dae speculate whether the centaurs, like the empire, have vanished, or whether they've retreated behind the DMZ's second wormhole. Gunther agrees to calculate how long it has been since his departure by analyzing orbital positions. After a six-day approach, the trio arrives at Gunther's home world to find only ruins of a once-technological civilization. The planet's environmental parameters remain viable for centaurs, so survivors may exist. Gunther conducts detailed SUDDAR scans revealing no operating industrial-level technology, but detecting controlled heat sources in concentrated areas suggesting small settlements. Unable to land itself, Gunther requests assistance. Icarus and Dae transfer a drone and roamers to Gunther, downgrading communications to maintain consistency rather than introducing advanced SCUT technology at once. Gunther quickly masters the new equipment and sends roamers to scout nearby villages. While Icarus and Dae begin constructing an autofactory in high orbit using debris from the centaur civilization, Gunther reports his astronomical calculations: 562 years have passed since his departure. This significantly postdates the empire's collapse, suggesting the centaur civilization fell independently rather than through wormhole-related causes. Gunther has also established surveillance of local populations, discovering they speak a degraded version of Standard language. Gunther declares his intention to remain and rebuild civilization, aid descendants of his family, and investigate the collapse's cause. Icarus and Dae acknowledge they cannot stay for such decades-long work but offer compiled technological files to assist Gunther's long-term efforts before departing.
