Chapter 5
Chapter Five: Mystery System
Overview
Icarus and Dae arrive at an alien system after five years of deceleration and discover two mysterious radiation sources in the Kuiper belt. Investigation reveals these are wormhole endpoints maintained by small satellites, connected to an apparently abandoned civilization spread across multiple planets and habitats. Despite no signs of active inhabitants, the system shows signs of recent, organized departure rather than catastrophic destruction.
Summary
After arriving in the alien system, Icarus and Dae detect two point sources of microwave radiation separated by ten degrees in orbit. They cautiously approach and find two small satellites flanking a ring of empty space emitting the radiation. Dae's circling observations reveal the ring exhibits lensing effects with symmetrical distortion and unusual star-pattern discontinuities. Icarus identifies it as a wormhole endpoint, likely paired with the second radiation source. The two satellites appear to maintain the wormhole using negative energy. They plan to establish an autofactory here and extend SCUT relay connections back toward human space. Proceeding to investigate the inner system, they launch camouflaged drones that reveal an inhabited-appearing civilization on multiple planets and moons, with abundant high-rise construction and park spaces. However, the system shows virtually no thermal radiation, lights, or traffic. Despite flying openly through the system with navigation lights and radio noise, they receive no response—no challenge, scan, or acknowledgment. The civilization appears meticulously maintained rather than damaged or destroyed: no corpses, no debris, streets clean of accumulated dirt, suggesting recent and orderly departure rather than plague, disaster, or conflict. The home planet, a neighboring habitable world, the largest moon with domes, and a single O'Neill cylinder show signs of advanced technology and organization. Icarus and Dae conclude the civilization departed deliberately and recently—perhaps within five years—leaving behind functional automated maintenance systems but no inhabitants. They plan to conduct full SUDDAR scans for holotank analysis while continuing investigation of the wormhole system.
