Chapter Forty-Nine: The Quiniverse

Bob attends the first Quinlan moot in Quiniverse dataspace, where Theresa and Anec officially welcome their one-thousandth resident. A fight breaks out during the opening speech, but Anec employs a creative solution using cartoon imagery to diffuse the conflict and establish community standards.

Bob accepts an invitation from Theresa to attend the inaugural Quinlan moot in Quiniverse, arriving in Quinlan form at an enormous pub where hundreds of residents gather. Theresa and Anec explain their goal: to foster community among the replicants, as most new residents have been living solitary VR lives with minimal social interaction. They note that Quinlans, as furred predators, are less naturally inclined toward congregation than humans. During Rita's opening speech welcoming the one-thousandth member, a dispute erupts among several Quinlans who each claim to be that member. The argument escalates into a full brawl. Rather than using traditional discipline, Anec transforms the fight into a cartoon-style cloud of smoke and lightning bolts—inspired by his recent viewing of HumanTube. The surrounding Quinlans laugh at the combatants, causing them to stop and sit down in shame. Anec explains that ridicule is more effective than lectures for establishing behavioral norms at moots. The speech resumes with Rita formally welcoming Norm of West Elbow as the one-thousandth member.
