AFTERWORD

Chapter 12

Chapter 11

Overview

After a failed escape attempt orchestrated by a shape-shifting puca that lured her with the illusion of her father, Feyre confronts Tamlin about her desire to return home. She learns that her family is now well cared for and that Tamlin hunts a dangerous creature called the Bogge on his lands. Over the following three days, Feyre joins Lucien on border patrol and begins experiencing guilt and nightmares about killing Andras, marking a shift in her moral reckoning.

Summary

Feyre attempts to escape from the manor after spotting her father beckoning from the gates, but Tamlin catches her and reveals the figure was a puca—a faerie creature that uses victims' desires to lure them to their deaths. Tamlin forces her back inside, displaying claws and fangs in his anger. Feyre argues that she made a vow to her mother to care for her family and cannot simply abandon that duty by remaining in captivity, even in comfort. Tamlin responds that by staying and allowing her family to be cared for by his resources, she is fulfilling her vow rather than breaking it. He also explains the changed state of the lands: dangerous creatures like the puca now roam freely because the wards that once contained them have weakened due to a sickness affecting Prythian. Tamlin reveals he was trained as a warrior for his father's war-band and was never meant to rule these lands. Over the next three days, Feyre joins Lucien on border patrol while Tamlin hunts the Bogge. During one patrol, Feyre spots a healthy red doe but chooses not to hunt it, indicating a shift in her instincts. Lucien mentions that Tamlin becomes moody and prefers to work alone; he also explains that faeries require firm, brutal leadership to maintain power and order. That night, Feyre experiences a vivid nightmare in which she shoots a High Fae male through the eye with an ash arrow, then finds herself holding his flayed skin. She wakes in horror, wrestling with guilt and shame over what she did to Andras in his wolf form.
