Chapter 17
Overview
Feyre awakens to screams in the manor and finds Tamlin carrying in a dying Summer Court faerie whose wings have been brutally torn off by an unknown female attacker. As the faerie dies despite their efforts to save him, Feyre comforts him and later apologizes to Tamlin for her role in Andras's death, showing her growing compassion for the faerie world.
Summary
Feyre wakes from nightmares and hears screaming from downstairs. She rushes to the foyer to find Tamlin carrying a blue-skinned Summer Court faerie with his wings ripped off at the shoulder blades. Tamlin explains that scouts found the faerie dumped over the borderline. The faerie, traumatized and losing blood rapidly, repeatedly cries that a mysterious woman took his wings. Despite Tamlin's attempts to treat the wounds with hot water and bandages, the faerie bleeds out uncontrollably. Feyre helps hold the faerie down as Tamlin tends to him, and when his injury proves fatal, she stays at his side, stroking his hair and lying that he will get his wings back. She witnesses Tamlin perform a prayer for the dead before the faerie passes. Afterward, as Tamlin prepares to bury the body alone, Feyre confesses that she comforted the faerie because she wouldn't want to die alone herself. She also apologizes to Tamlin for her hatred and her role in Andras's death, expressing genuine regret. Tamlin accepts her words without response and carries the faerie away into the moonlit fields.
