AFTERWORD

Chapter 19

Chapter 18

Overview

Feyre spends the day with Tamlin and Lucien at a beautiful enchanted glen with a pool of starlight. Tamlin reveals details about Lucien's tragic past—his lover was executed by his father, and his brothers attempted to kill him—and shows Feyre a magical place from his childhood. The chapter culminates in Feyre and Tamlin swimming together in the starlight pool, followed by Lucien offering Feyre a finely crafted hunting knife as a gesture of reconciliation.

Summary

The chapter opens with Feyre intending to apologize to Tamlin for Andras's death. Instead, Tamlin invites her and Lucien on a ride without weapons to a secret glen—a breathtakingly beautiful place filled with ancient oaks, flowers, and golden light. Once there, Tamlin shows Feyre a sparkling pool filled with starlight, revealing it was his favorite haunt as a boy. When he invites her to swim, Feyre initially refuses but ultimately joins him, shedding her clothes to enter the warm, silken water. While swimming, Tamlin asks about Feyre's past, and she reveals how her father, once the Prince of Merchants, lost his fortune when three ships sank en route to Bharat, forcing the family into poverty when she was eleven. Tamlin then explains Lucien's backstory: Lucien is the youngest son of the High Lord of the Autumn Court, fell in love with a faerie beneath his station, and was forced to watch his father execute her. When his brothers later attempted to kill him, Tamlin intervened, killing one and claiming Lucien as his emissary. On the ride back, Feyre privately thanks Lucien for his advice regarding the Suriel and acknowledges that she understands his resentment of her. Lucien reveals he hesitated before coming to her aid during the attack and gives her a jeweled hunting knife as both apology and token of a tentative truce.
