AFTERWORD

Chapter 5

Chapter 4

Overview

A faerie beast arrives at the cottage demanding payment for the wolf Feyre killed and sold at the market. After learning the Treaty requires a life for a life, Feyre is offered a choice: death or crossing the wall into Prythian to live on the beast's lands. She accepts the terms to protect her family and departs with the creature into the woods, leaving her father, sisters, and her promise to her dying mother behind.

Summary

A massive faerie creature with golden fur, a wolf-like head, and elk horns bursts into the cottage, roaring accusations of murder. Feyre realizes it is a faerie and positions herself in front of her terrified sisters and cowering father. The beast demands to know who killed a large gray wolf. Feyre initially denies involvement but eventually admits she killed it and sold its hide at the market, claiming she would have done so regardless of its nature given what faeries have done to humans. The faerie explains the Treaty between realms: any unprovoked attack on faerie-kind by humans demands a human life in payment. When Feyre realizes she cannot fight or escape, the beast offers her an alternative to death—cross the wall into Prythian and live out her life on his lands as payment. Feyre initially resists, citing the danger of Prythian, but the beast insists this is an act of mercy. Her father attempts to negotiate, offering gold, but the faerie dismisses him. Recognizing she must leave to protect her family from the creature's wrath, Feyre gathers her belongings and prepares provisions for her father. She warns Nesta against marrying Tomas Mandray. Her father, experiencing unexpected clarity, tells her she was always too good for their life and urges her never to return, even if she escapes. Feyre leaves with the faerie into the snowy woods, abandoning the promise she made to her dying mother to care for her family.
