Chapter 9
Chapter 8
Overview
Feyre explores the manor grounds and encounters mysterious shimmering creatures in the garden before being called back by Alis. At dinner, she steals a knife and observes Tamlin and Lucien while planning to win Lucien's favor so he might persuade Tamlin to release her. She learns that Tamlin deduced she was the hunter in her family and deflects his condolences about her mother's death.
Summary
Feyre methodically surveys the manor gardens and grounds, mentally mapping escape routes and noting the lack of locks on her window, while remaining aware of the deadly nature of Prythian beyond the estate. In the garden, she senses and briefly glimpses two small, shimmering invisible creatures playing near her before Alis calls her to lunch, and the entities vanish when she turns around. Feyre resolves to approach Lucien as a potential ally, hoping to persuade him to speak to Tamlin on her behalf, though she recognizes the uphill battle given that his friend was killed. At dinner—the only meal she attends with them—Feyre steals a knife while Lucien discusses a malfunction of his magical eye. Tamlin reveals he deduced she was the family's hunter by observing her scarred hands and recalling her bow and arrows, leading to an awkward exchange about her mother's death from typhus when Feyre was eight. After the meal, Feyre packs a small satchel with spare clothes and her stolen knife in her room, maintaining contingency plans for escape while pretending docility and considering how to win Lucien's cooperation.
