Chapter 8
8. Farming Satellites
Overview
This chapter shifts focus to Bob's ongoing work with the Deltan civilization at their new settlement, "Camelot," a mesa-based village. Bob observes tool-making instruction, spear-training practice, and has philosophical conversations with Archimedes, the most intelligent Deltan, about the challenges of cultural development and the growing responsibilities Bob has undertaken as their mysterious benefactor.
Summary
Bob uses a drone to observe the Deltans at their new village settlement on a mesa called Camelot, which offers superior defensive advantages over their previous forest clearing. Archimedes, an adolescent Deltan of exceptional intelligence, is learning advanced flint-knapping from Moses, while other Deltans practice spear-throwing on a nearby range with varying degrees of success. Bob notes that Moses appears weakened from the journey and that two Deltans were recently killed by gorilloid attacks. Archimedes leads Bob to the practice range where warriors like Arnold, a natural tactician and killer, work on combat skills. Bob discusses his difficulties with the tribe's medicine woman, Cruella, who resists his attempts to introduce new methods and technologies. They ascend to the central bluff where adolescent Deltans gather, and Archimedes notes the girl Diana's apparent jealousy of Bob's attention. From this vantage point, they survey the beautiful landscape and mountains beyond. Archimedes asks philosophical questions about how many copies of Bob exist and how he creates his brothers, prompting reflection on Bob's expanding responsibilities and growing TODO list. The chapter ends with both of them sitting in contemplative silence overlooking the village.
