Chapter 81

Genealogy

Overview

Funeral Bob attends the funeral of Diana, a Deltan woman and longtime companion of Archimedes. Diana passed peacefully overnight, and her body is laid to rest with flowers from her extensive family line, numbering thirty-one descendants. Archimedes grieves visibly as Funeral Bob observes the ceremony and reflects on mortality.

Summary

Funeral Bob stands witness as Archimedes and his three children—Buster, Rosa, and Pete—mourn Diana's death at her funeral on Delta Eridani I. Diana is placed in a grave, and Archimedes and each of his children place a white flower in her arms. A long procession of Diana and Archimedes's descendants then passes by to add more flowers, resulting in thirty-one flowers total—testament to their prolific family line. The grave is filled and sealed with protective stone slabs. After the ceremony ends and the crowd disperses, Archimedes kneels beside the grave and grieves with low keening sounds, rocking back and forth. Funeral Bob, emotionally overwhelmed by the scene, briefly enters VR to recover his composure. Upon returning, he observes that Archimedes is approximately seventy years old, making him slightly older than Moses was at his death and considered quite ancient. Funeral Bob reflects grimly on mortality and resolves that Diana's funeral will be his last attendance at such a ceremony.
