Chapter 23
Chapter 23
Overview
Carl encounters Frank, the ex-cop whose daughter Yvette died in a previous confrontation, at the Desperado Club. Frank gifts Carl the Enchanted Night Wyrm's Ring of Divine Suffering—a legendary item that grants stat bonuses and the dangerous "Marked for Death" skill, but at great personal cost. Through their conversation, Carl learns the tragic backstory of how Frank and his ex-wife Maggie forced their daughter to wear the ring and mark Carl, leading to Yvette's death when Maggie killed her in pain from Carl's dynamite trap.
Summary
Carl and his companions arrive at Station 41 and park the train. While Donut explores the strip clubs, Carl receives updates: Imani's group has reached Trainyard D and sheltered in an administrative building after a fierce battle with ghouls; the Kravyad is an NPC snake woman now threatening suicide after Bautista neutralized her hypnotic abilities, leaving half the crawler group in danger of being stranded without souvenir hats. Carl trains briefly and sleeps before heading to the Desperado Club. There he encounters Frank, a level 17 Night Elf Blood Assassin whom he recognizes from their prior conflict. Frank, heavily intoxicated and missing his right hand, reveals he hasn't seen his ex-wife Maggie since the second floor. Frank explains that after their divorce, he and Maggie used the legendary Enchanted Night Wyrm's Ring of Divine Suffering—which grants the "Marked for Death" skill allowing stat gains from killing marked crawlers—to force their teenage daughter Yvette to wear it and mark Carl so they could attack him. The ring caused the rift between Frank and Maggie; after Carl's dynamite trap injured Yvette, Maggie killed her own daughter because the ring's curse prevented her from healing the pain. Frank gifts the ring to Carl as his "revenge," wanting Carl to understand the curse's destructive nature. Frank reveals he and Maggie were separated law enforcement officers who reunited briefly the night the dungeon appeared when retrieving their runaway daughter. Carl accepts the ring and leaves, concluding Frank is no longer a threat but likely won't survive the floor.
