AFTERWORD

Chapter 35

Epilogue

Overview

This epilogue chapter depicts the climactic execution of Carl's plan to redirect the Krakaren monsters invading the dungeon. As the self-destruct sequence initiates and portals open in station centers, Carl's interdiction cart—shrunk and repositioned overhead by Zhang's magic wand, then enlarged to hang vertically over the chamber's central hole—successfully channels thousands of creatures into the abyss. The chapter follows the intense defensive battle that ensues as monsters pour in from multiple chokepoints, with brief interludes revealing collateral damage elsewhere in the dungeon and Fire Brandy's existential crisis after discovering the dungeon's constructed nature.

Summary

Carl immediately mobilizes after learning of the impending catastrophe, evacuating personnel from stairwell stations. While Katia's team grinds experience on juvenile Krakaren creatures (now levels 14-17), Carl works to transport an interdiction cart to station 36's main chamber. His original plan to physically move the cart through hallways proves impossible, but Zhang Li Jun arrives with a shrinking wand—his last charge—allowing the cart to be transported through tight passages. Once enlarged and positioned vertically at the chamber's center with its portal facing downward, the setup is complete. When the self-destruct sequence triggers, sections of floor collapse and Krakaren monsters pour upward into the chambers. Carl's portal successfully siphons the creatures into the abyss, preventing the overwhelming invasion of his chamber. Carl visits the Nightmare train and encounters Fire Brandy in a melancholy state; she reveals that dwarves and gremlins hanged Madison (the human resources NPC) in retaliation, and that she's begun realizing the dungeon is a constructed simulation. As waves of increasingly powerful monsters (now levels 20-23, seven feet tall) attack from multiple chokepoints despite the portal's success, Carl coordinates with Katia and Donut to execute tactical strikes, using boom jugs to block monster waves. Puddle Jump teleportation brings them safely back despite acid damage. Two explosions occur at distant soul crystal locations, and Mordecai reveals the crystals have stress limits and can explode like fuses. Carl hints at a new idea involving this discovery.
