Overview
When the Moon Hatched is an epic fantasy novel set in a world divided into three realms—The Shade, The Burn, and The Fade—bound together by ancient magic and dragon lore. The story centers on the collision of two intertwined destinies: Raeve, an assassin for the underground organization Fíur du Ath, and Kaan Vaegor, the eldest son of King Ostern and rightful ruler of The Burn. At the heart of the world lies the Aether Stone, a mystical diadem containing the essence of Caelis, the God of Aether, who was imprisoned by the other four Creator gods to prevent catastrophic moonfalls. Raeve, initially operating as "Kemori" while performing in underground establishments and conducting covert missions, becomes entangled with Rekk Zharos, a brutal bounty hunter hired by the Crown to suppress dissidents and capture gifted children for conscription. When Rekk murders Essi, Raeve's beloved companion, Raeve is driven into a desperate hunt for vengeance that leads to her capture, torture, and a shocking rescue by Kaan himself from the coliseum execution grounds.
The novel interweaves multiple storylines across its expansive narrative. In The Shade, Princess Kyzari—bearer of the Aether Stone diadem—discovers she can hear Caelis's voice within the stone and falls in love with the imprisoned god, desperately seeking a way to free him without dying. In Arithia, the royal family of The Shade faces tragedy when Mah and Pah are poisoned, leaving their children—including the narrator who claims an Aether Stone—devastated and vulnerable to political manipulation. Across the realms, prophecies and magical signs converge: ancient markings depicting moons and a silver Fate Herder herald the arrival of someone destined to anchor the moons to the sky, while the rare Great Flurrt celebration brings dragons to unprecedented mating rituals and intensifies political intrigue.
Raeve's and Kaan's relationship becomes the emotional core of the narrative, complicated by Raeve's fragmented memories of a past life where she was someone named Elluin and loved a Moonplume dragon named Slátra. As Raeve struggles to reclaim her identity while haunted by trauma and driven by vengeance, Kaan reveals that he has spent twenty-three phases reconstructing Slátra's petrified form from scattered shards, hoping to bring peace to Elluin's spirit. The two navigate impossible circumstances: Raeve is pregnant with Kaan's child but bound by King Ostern's threats to marry his other son Tyroth in order to protect those she loves. Meanwhile, a darker force emerges—the Scavenger King Arkyn, who holds Princess Kyzari captive and seeks revenge against Kaan while pursuing the throne of The Burn.
The narrative culminates in layers of revelation and sacrifice. Elluin's hidden diary exposes that Kyzari is actually Kaan's biological daughter, not Tyroth's, making her the true inheritor of the Aether Stone and the key to understanding Caelis's imprisonment. The Fate Herder continues to manipulate events from the shadows, herding characters toward their destined roles in anchoring the falling moons. As multiple factions clash—Tyroth's ambitions, Cadok's tyranny, Ostern's ruthlessness, and Arkyn's vendetta—the realms teeter on the brink of war, with the moons themselves threatening to fall once more. Through it all, themes of love transcending death, the price of power, and the possibility of redemption weave together in a story about individuals learning to reclaim agency in worlds designed to control them.
Plot Summary
The novel opens in Gore, the capital of The Shade, where Raeve—operating under the alias Kemori—performs as a musician in the underground Hungry Hollow establishment while secretly serving the Fíur du Ath, a rebellion organization fighting the Crown's oppression. After a performance, she encounters the dangerous Lord Tarik Relaken, whose advances she narrowly escapes with help from a mysterious cloaked male. Later that night, in a wind tunnel carved into a cliff wall overlooking Gore, Raeve captures and tortures Tarik, discovering he runs an Undercity operation enslaving null children in battle pits. She kills him, carving letters into his chest to mark him as a rapist and child abuser. While disposing of his body, she encounters the mysterious male from the Hungry Hollow—a tall figure radiating elemental power despite wearing a null-presenting ear cuff. She allows him to live, warning him not to follow her. Raeve then travels to Ruse's magical supply shop to gather items for Essi, her young companion, who is crafting protective runed devices. At Sereme's office—the Fíur du Ath's headquarters—Raeve is ordered to cease her vigilante activities because the legendary bounty hunter Rekk Zharos has arrived in the city, hired by the Crown to stop recruitment of young elemental conscripts. Despite the warning, Raeve is emotionally invested in rescuing enslaved children and continues planning her missions.
Parallel to Raeve's story, in The Shade's royal realm of Arithia, a young princess receives a mysterious visit from her uncle, who reveals she can hear a voice emanating from the Aether Stone diadem she wears—the voice of Caelis, the imprisoned God of Aether. The princess, Kyzari, has fallen in love with Caelis over eighty phases of listening and seeks her uncle's help to free him from the stone without dying. Her uncle refuses, insisting it is impossible and that the stone's purpose must be preserved. Meanwhile, Haedeon, Kyzari's older brother, departs for Netheryn to steal a Moonplume egg as part of a coming-of-age ritual, despite being poorly suited for the dangerous task—he is large, loud, and cannot hear elemental songs. His younger sibling accompanies him secretly and must ultimately save him when doomquills attack, stealing the egg while Haedeon's legs are broken in the chaos. Haedeon's Moonplume, Allume, eventually heals enough to fly, and the young sibling experiences joy seeing their brother smile again—the first time since the trauma.
Back in Gore, Rekk's arrival forces Raeve into increasingly reckless action. Essi, desperate to help the enslaved children, is attacked and mortally wounded by Rekk's agents in a deliberate ambush designed to draw Raeve out. Raeve holds Essi as she dies, her grief transforming into an icy rage that awakens some dormant power within her. She pursues Rekk into the Undercity, singing elemental songs and slaughtering soldiers with brutal precision before being trapped, shot with an iron projectile that silences her connection to the Creator gods, and captured by Rekk himself. The bounty hunter beats her unconscious after she bites off his finger in desperation.
Raeve awakens in a prison cell, tortured by Rekk over multiple days as he attempts to extract information about the Fíur du Ath and The Flourish, an underground safe haven. She refuses to break, viewing her suffering as penance for Essi's death and her own failures. Her trial before the Guild of Nobles becomes a theatrical display; she admits guilt to all charges, insults King Cadok and the court, and remains defiant despite knowing execution awaits. The Nobles vote on her execution method, splitting between drawing and quartering and feeding her to the Moltenmaws. A mysterious hooded figure—later revealed as King Kaan Vaegor of The Burn—breaks the tie by voting for the dragons, seemingly sealing her fate. However, before the Moltenmaws can feed, an enormous Sabersythe dragon emerges and seizes Raeve, carrying her away into the sky while she sings in an unknown language. Instead of devouring her, the dragon—Rygun, Kaan's own beast—delivers her to Kaan.
Kaan reveals he extracted her from the coliseum to prevent the execution and the bloodshed that would follow. He carries her to his mother's abandoned dwelling in The Burn's lush jungle region and provides shelter, sustenance, and healing from a Runi named Bhea, whose Dragonsight ability detects something extraordinary within Raeve—something the protagonist desperately pleads Bhea not to reveal. As Raeve heals, Kaan shows her unexpected kindness and tenderness. One night, she nearly kills him in his sleep with a dragonscale blade before experiencing a profound emotional breakthrough; instead of murdering him, she seduces him, but becomes overwhelmed by the intimacy and demands he treat the encounter as meaningless. Kaan, flinching at her cruelty, refuses and orders her to rest. Raeve flees the cottage through a window and attempts to escape down a cliff face, but a flash flood sweeps her into the river below.
Raeve awakens rescued by Boltanic Plains warriors who are stunned when the legendary Fate Herder—a silver mythical beast rarely seen in physical form—appears and herds her toward their settlement. The creature guides her to a colossal community carved within the ribcage and skull of a dead dragon, where inhabitants hail her as "Kholu," a figure from ancient prophecy destined to bear offspring that will anchor the moons to the sky forever. The Sól, a blind seer, confirms these markings were foretold. Raeve is subjected to the Tookah Trial—a brutal combat where two males, Hock and Zaran, fight for the honor of binding with her and fathering her children. When Raeve refuses to accept either male as her bound mate, the community allows her to fight for herself. During the combat, Hock poisons her with a venomous serpent bite and overcomes her; as he moves to deliver a final blow, Kaan—having tracked her through Rygun—arrives and kills Hock by severing his throat. The Sól declares that blood has been spilled in Raeve's honor, and the only way to prevent moons from falling is for Raeve to be claimed by someone. Kaan kneels and offers her his málmr—a sacred bonding necklace depicting a Sabersythe and Moonplume in eternal embrace—removing himself from hierarchy and placing Raeve above him as roskr.
Kaan and Raeve travel to Dhomm, The Burn's capital, where Rygun carries Raeve into the Imperial Stronghold. The inhabitants are shocked to recognize her resemblance to Elluin Neván, a figure believed dead. Kaan reveals that Raeve has no recollection of her past life and knows herself only by her middle name. A healer named Agni performs delicate surgery on Raeve's fractured skull; afterward, Kaan's sister Veya reveals that Raeve's presence is dangerous—if Tyroth, Kaan's brother, discovers her, it could spark war. Kaan promises to help Raeve discover her truth and make her own choices, regardless of the outcome.
While Raeve recovers, she explores the Stronghold and the surrounding city of Dhomm. She purchases supplies from Vruhn at The Curly Quill, a shop owner with Mindweft abilities who senses she is missing something special hidden within her and warns that she suppresses her true power—Rayne, the water goddess—beneath an icy mental lake. Kaan continues to care for her, bringing meals and playing music while she sings. During one intimate moment, Raeve experiences overwhelming emotional connection and begins crying—the first tears she has shed since losing her family. Kaan holds her tenderly, reminding her of how her father once comforted her mother.
